Keeping the lines of communication open is key when working with a web designer. However, if you are not well versed in the terms used by web designers, their language may seem foreign. To help clarify, here are some common terms and definitions used in the world of web design.
Web Browser – Also called a browser. These are programs used to access files and websites on the internet. Popular web browsers used today are Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Safari.
Domain Name – In simplest terms, a domain name is the registered name of your website. For example, the domain name of our website is cahpromotions.com.
Domain Registry – The domain registry is the company your domain name is registered with.
Website Host – This is the place where all your website’s pages and files are stored and made available to computers worldwide via the internet.
IP Address – Short for Internet Protocol address, every device used to access the internet has an IP address. An IP address is much like a telephone number as it is used to connect one computer to another.
URL – Short for Uniform Resource Locator, the URL address includes a website’s domain name along with the exact address of each page of a website. For example, the address of our blog page is http://www.cahpromotions.com/our-blog.
DNS – Short for Domain Name Server, a DNS is used to connect a website with the website host by directing an IP address goes to a domain name.
E-Commerce – Also known as an online store, the term e-Commerce is used to describe any website that sells a product or service online.
SEO – Short for Search Engine Optimization, this term describes the process of making a website pages rank higher on the list of search engine results.
Search Engines – Software designed to find relative information everywhere on the internet then comprise a list of results based on the terms used in the search. Popular search engines are Google, Bing, and Yahoo.
UX – Short for User Experience, UX describes how intuitive and easy it is to navigate a website.
